Concordance - posting 5

My Dearest friend,

i would like to explain about "Concordance" in language context. Basically, what is concordance? so, let me give some descriptions of it as i've learned from my Language and IT class conducted by Assoc Prof Datin Dr Norizan.

Concordance is an alphabetized list of the most frequently occurring words in a book, excluding common words such as "of" and "it." The font size of a word is proportional to the number of times it occurs in the book. Hover your mouse over a word to see how many times it occurs, or click on a word to see a list of book excerpts containing that word.

therefore, it will be more easier for us as a reader or researcher to figure out words counting as well as reducing tensions and saving more time consumptions.

in recent times, "concordancer" has been invented as a software and plug - in tools which will help to the usage of corncodancing.

Below is some articles which regard to the article:

With Concordance, you can

  • make indexes and word lists
  • count word frequencies
  • compare different usages of a word
  • analyse keywords
  • find phrases and idioms

Concordance is being used in

  • Language teaching and learning
  • Data mining and data clean-up
  • Literary and linguistic scholarship
  • Translation and language engineering
  • Corpus linguistics
  • Natural language software development
  • Lexicography
  • Content analysis in many disciplines including accountancy, history, marketing, musicology, politics, geography, and media studies

LINGUISTIC INSIGHTS FROM CONCORDANCING

Concordancers are certainly not tools that computer novices can be turned loose on without proper preparation beforehand. In many instances, both students and teachers must be made aware of the methodological considerations underpinning use of such software. Inherent limitations in the database are rarely intuitively understood. Why, for example, should the word 'potential' never occur in a corpus of biology readings, yet occur repeatedly in a corpus of physics texts, always as a property of energy? The relationship between raw data and output is not obvious to all, and the very existence of the text base, its particular bias, and its relevance to the students must all be explained and emphasized.

Formulation of productive queries is particularly difficult for language learners, who may need assistance until they have become familiar with the technique. Misspellings which spoil productive searches are common, and successful use of wild cards requires near-native competence in anticipating word derivations. It is also difficult for language learners to independently phrase queries so that they will expose subtle patterns in the language. Such patterns will likely have to be pre-considered by the teacher/facilitator, and until students have got the hang of concordancing, heuristics for getting at patterns will likely have to be worked out in advance and spelled out to students as well.

Therefore, as language is dynamic and will always facing changes, such software and more research upon new technologies for linguist usage are very important. English and language is so fascinating to be learned as language will narrow barriers. Concordance is among beneficial software for educational purposes.

E-komuniti - an effort for people (posting 4)

Hai friends,

i am glad took an opportunity to join a seminar held by E-Community Research Center. A center of excellence on bridging digital divide appointed by EPU Malaysia. You might wonder what E-komuniti is all about right? Let me share some information, E-Komuniti is an project to narrow gap of internet usage for those in rural areas. Therefore, it is such a brilliant efforts as i do certainly believe that they should be aware upon the advantages of using internet.

Thank you so much Prof Datin Dr Norizan for this mesmerizing experiences!

Apart from that, the seminar had gathered experts to discuss on certain issues regarding internet usage for people's benefit.

I am totally impressed with the ideas of tele-centers which been explained by Prof Datin Dr Norizan and also one of her student's presentation upon blogging as to reduce writing apprehensions.

Telecenters By Datin Norizan

Basically, the research is based in Kedah where 85% of them are living in rural areas. Thus, the needs to introduce IT and internet for them are necessary to help bridging "world" through the new technologies in a context of Malaysia.

However some barriers occurring within the process:

1) they are poor to have a computer.
2) No skills and no ideas for using computer and internet.
3) There's no intentions of using internet

As been aware of that particular factors, efforts are needed to persuade those people to use internet according to their interest.

"Interest" here means that they can use wide advantages of internet to search information regarding weather, current technologies of fishing as well as global rate of fish pricing since most of them earn living as fisherman.

Blogging as beneficial activity to reduce writing apprehensions.

The talk was given by one of the Datin's student which is Madam Azianura. I thought the ideas of why students are lack in writing skills are due to the writing apprehensions.

some factors may lead to these reasons:
  • Scared to write
  • Hands cramp
  • Hate writing
  • Produced shorter essays
  • Ideas hairdly developed
Thus, i am strongly agree that blogging can improve writing skills as stated by Madam Azianura
" Learn from mistakes, it is a best teacher". Besides, there is no obstacles to write via blog but teachers will always perfom as a guider! we should appreciate our teachers friends! :)

see you in the next posting :)

With Love,
Adam Amin

mamma metasearch

mamma metasearch is a search engine where people will find it easier and faster to find information by gathering the most relevant results from the best search engines on the Internet.

Metasearch technology aggregates results originating from a variety of other search sources. It's like searching multiple search engines, all at the same time. It's therefore very important that those search engines sources are diverse and of high quality so that we'll have the best results on the Web to display for every search performed.

Google Scholar

provides a simple way to broadly search for scholarly literature. From one place, we can search across many disciplines and sources: peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, abstracts and articles, from academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories, universities and other scholarly organizations. Google Scholar helps you identify the most relevant research across the world of scholarly research.

Features of Google Scholar

  • Search diverse sources from one convenient place
  • Find papers, abstracts and citations
  • Locate the complete paper through your library or on the web
  • Learn about key papers in any area of research
Yahoo.com

Yahoo! provides users with access to a rich collection of resources, including without limitation various communications tools, forums, shopping services, search services, personalized content and branded programming through its network of properties which may be accessed through any various medium or device now known or hereafter developed.

Yahoo! Services may include certain communications from Yahoo!, such as service announcements, administrative messages and the Yahoo! Newsletter, and that these communications are considered part of Yahoo! membership.

Eric Digest

provides one way to search on topics of prime current interest in education. There are a large variety of topics covered including teaching, learning, libraries, charter schools, special education, higher education, home schooling, and many more.

The full-text ERIC Digest database contains over 3000 Digests with the latest updates being added to this site in July 2005.

Similarities

Basically, the purposes of these search engines except Eric digest.com is to search and finding information which regard of educational purposes. As for example, Eric digest is a Data base applications that will ensure students and educationist to search articles, online journals or even interactive libraries upon education fields especially English and literature. Furthermore, these applications also contains multiple usage like downloading software, chatting and image searching.

Differences

However, some of these search engines have some differences. For example, mamma.com is a meta search where it will integrate finding by gathering all results from other popular search engines such as google.com or yahoo.com. Furthermore, yahoo.com is a search engines where users will able to search information within the applications provided such as audio files and etc. But, Yahoo.com will enable users to sign up emels and popular chatting medium Yahoo messenger. Eric digest is contrast with mamma.com or Google scholar since it is a webbase or database applications but yet still manage to give brilliant information on educational journals and articles. Sadly, no emels can be used within this web base.

Blogs as medium to Improve ourselves - posting 2

article 1 :

Blogging improves your writing skills.

Better writing ability, and an enhanced ability to express yourself in print, is a rarely thought about benefit of blogging.

While most people think of writers as infinitely talented, living in some rarified air denied to the rest of us, writing is a learned skill.

While some people are indeed born more talented with the written word than others, most people can become better writers simply through practice.

Blogging is as good a practice field as any.

Like playing sports or a musical instrument, improvement in skill level only results from constant practice. The more you work on the skills, the better at applying them you become.

Writing your daily blog post provides a fresh blank canvas for self expression. As the words form sentences on the page, a sense of accomplishment is the direct result.

It feels good to finish a blog post.

Don't be bashful. Feel proud of what you have written.

Many bloggers have told me they had no idea that they could write even one coherent post; let alone one or more a day. Often, they were entirely convinced that writing well formed thoughts was impossible for them.

Becoming bloggers changed that mistaken idea entirely.

It's all a matter of practice, and with that continual application of fingers to keyboard, the skills improve constantly.

Before you know it, another well written and easily understood blog post appears on the page.

It's almost like magic.

Of course, I keep thinking that through constant practice, my typing skills will eventually improve to the level of being semi-adequate. Occasionally, I can even type a word or two without looking at the keyboard. That event always shocks me.

I believe that is truly a case of real magic; or perhaps even a miracle of monumental proportions.

Well, enough of that.

With writing, the more a person does it, the better they get at doing it.

Blogs are a great way to practice and hone your ability to express yourself and your thoughts via the written word.

Learning how to write well, and express thoughts in a logical and coherent manner, are hidden benefits of blogging.

It's a good thing those benefits don't stay hidden for long.

SUMMARY

The article emphasizing the importance of blogging. Basically, blogging can improve our skills and as a medium to polish our writing especially for students. Students will be able to feel the satisfaction after a post has been published, therefore they will keep on practice to write something beneficial for educational purposes .
