synopsis - phantom of the opera

Every story needs a synopsis for the readers to get an overview of the story itself. My groups did a presentation on the novel ‘Phantom of the Opera’. We had chosen this novel because of the mysterious story and characters that was created by famous French novelist, Gaston Leroux. Nowadays, there are many version of the novel itself in terms of the storyline, and it has been made into theater, play, and movie. Although there are many version of the story, but we had chosen the original version from Gaston Leroux.

The story happened in Paris Opera House somewhere in 1880. In the opera house, there lived a ghost that haunts everyone including the dancers, workers, directors, box keepers, audience and the singers. Yes, the beautiful opera house singer is the one that has been haunted the most by the ghost that lived seven feet under the opera house. The phantom himself had been giving Christine Daae a singing lesson each night and had been the ‘Angel of Music’ for her ever since. The truth is that he wants Christine to love him as much as he loves her. But sadly, Christine Daae finds her true love in Raoul de Chagny, the high class family in the society. Upon knowing Christine’s love for Raoul, Erik gets angry and he is willing to do anything that would win Christine’s heart. The feeling of envy towards de Chagny brings Erik to create chaos in the opera house.

Basically, the phantom can do numerous acts that would be considered as a warning should anybody disobey his wish or commands. The phantom killed Joseph Buquet for talking bad about him and this proves that the phantom dislikes being talked about. The climax starts when Christine Daae performs on the Faust night, the lights suddenly went out, and the audience heard a woman’s scream. It is Christine’s voice and when the lights came on again, Christine Daae was not there on the stage.

She is missing without a trace. Raoul and the Persian went after her and they were looking all over the place. Suddenly, they found a secret door which they assume to connect with Erik’s secret place. Unfortunately for them, they were trapped in Erik’s torture chamber. Erik let Christine watch the suffering of her loved one and forced to marry him if she wants Raoul and the Persian to be free. Christine sacrifices herself for the sake of her love towards Vicomte de Chagny. She kissed Erik with all her heart and promise to marry him should he free Raoul and the Persian.

Erik realizes the true love between the opera singer and Raoul de Chagny and he were deeply touched by the sincere heart of Christine Daae. Erik felt guilty for all his evil action towards everyone in the opera house. Three weeks after he releases Christine and Raoul, he died of heartbreak and nobody ever saw him again. Nobody in Paris ever saw Raoul and Christine again and perhaps they live happily ever after somewhere in the North.
