thesis statement- phantom of the opera

Thesis statement is the author’s view of the story. It is his stands about as he wrote the storyline. In this novel, the author emphasizes the elements of love that can be seen through the characters of Christine Daae and Raoul de Chagny. In the story, Raoul met Christine by the sea on a holiday in Brittany and falls in love with her ever since. Four years later, when Christine works as an opera singer in the famous Paris Opera House, they meet again and their love blooms as the time goes by. As the love blooms for these two people, there is another man that wants Christine love and he is willing to do anything to win Christine’s heart even if he had to kidnap Christine.

Unfortunately for the ‘Phantom of the Opera’, Christine did not return his love and this leads to another theme in the story which is sacrifice. When Christine Daae is kidnapped by Erik, Raoul went after her for the sake of his love one. Daae realize that there was nothing angelic about Erik and willing to sacrifice for Raoul by agreeing to marry the phantom. This shows that both Christine and Raoul are willing to sacrifeice for each other no matter what happened between them. Besides that, Gaston Leroux also emphasizes on the issues of love between different social class people. For example, Raoul’s elder brother, Philippe dislike the relationship between Christine Daae and his brother because of the fact that they came from a different social class. Raoul came from a very respective family while Christine Daae is just an ordinary opera singer. But somehow, Raoul did not respond to his brother’s advice and still holding up to his love for the young opera singer. The author also raised the matter of tragic and tragedy which took place in the opera house itself.

The tragedy starts when somebody found Joseph Buquet’s body hanging in the opera house and people knew that it was the phantom that killed the opera worker. Then, the phantom create chaos when he dislikes the singing of La Carlotta and change her voice into

toad and that night, the great chandelier went down and killed one woman. That night, too, many people were hurt and cause La Carlotta to never sing again. The final tragedy that took place in the novel is when Christine Daae was kidnapped by the phantom and he forced her to marry him. Then, came to tragic events where Erik was found dead as a result of heartbreak upon learning the true love between Christine Daae and Raoul de Chagny. That is the author’s stand of the story ‘Phantom of the Opera’.
