settings- phantom of the opera


Settings are important for readers to get ideas toward the storylines. Besides, readers will be more eager to capture and analyze what is the story is all about. Thus, it is important for writers indicate any setting in their literature works. Consequently, in the novel “Phantom of the Opera" there are three important settings to be shared which are:

Place

Opera House which located somewhere in rural area of French, the town is beautifully amazed with nature settings by a seaside town of Perros-Guirec,Perros. Essentially, it also belongs to Erik and Mme tTime who both are spend almost every nights and time in the opera house. Furthermore, This house can be describe as big as palace which has seventeen floor, ten above the ground and seven under the ground behind, under the stage, there are stairs and passages. There are many rooms such as dressing room for the singer and dancer, room for the stage worker, the opera dresses and shoes. Amazingly, there are more than 2500 door in the building.

Social

The social setting take place after reviewing some factors, a town which consists of members that like to watch opera performances, besides the society can be illustrated as still applying their traditional values and customs especially things which regards with the power of black magic and myths. Furthermore, based on the social setting it will somehow relate with the historical setting. As for example, Paris is the most popular place with arts, opera and always associated with romantic city due to society who loves watching Opera that full of elements of romance. To be surprised, readers can see people in different status show their interest on watching opera by sitting together when the opera starts.

TIME

Broadly speaking, It can be stated that time setting in the novel is during the late nineteenth – century. This is due to the statement in the novel “The Phantom of the Opera opens at the Paris Opera-House in the late nineteenth-century, with the production of “Hannibal” (the elephant-tamer, not the face-eater)”. The Opera House was built in 1861 and finished in 1875 with cost forty seven million France. The story begins one day in 1880, when the people in the Opera House are really scared with the ghost in the Opera House. They never see the ghost, but they can hear his voice. Besides, the traditions of watching opera performances and listening to the Sopranos Songs are popular during at the particular time.
